Shawn Mendes, Lizzo, Halsey & More to Participate in ‘I’m Listening’ Mental Health Awareness Radio Special: To kick off National Suicide Prevention Week, music and sports stars including Lizzo, Tegan and Sara, Blink-182, Halsey, Disturbed, and Shawn Mendes — as well as a number of mental health professionals and first responders — will participate in a two-hour, commercial free radio special to help raise mental health awareness. The special, “I’m Listening,” will air at 7 a.m. local time on 235 Entercom radio stations on September 8.

How High Heat Can Impact Mental Health: Extreme temperatures negatively affect people with mental health conditions — especially those taking medications for their mental health, as the heat can contribute to adverse mental and physical health side effects.

Mental Health Websites in Europe Found Sharing User Data for Ads: After analyzing the data gathering of more than 135 mental health websites in Germany, France, and the UK, the privacy rights advocacy group Privacy International found that people visiting mental health websites to find information and seek support are also having their private health data tracked and passed to third parties for advertising purposes. According to Privacy International’s report, Your Mental Health for Sale, the organization’s findings “raise serious concerns about the ways in which websites about depression treat people’s data.”

Bipolar Disorder and Excessive Spending: Did you know something like 46% of people who have problem debt also have a mental health challenge? What about that 89% of those people say their financial problems have made their mental health conditions worse? Compulsive and irrational spending is especially a common symptom for people with bipolar disorder. George Hofmann lays out a list of strategies to help avoid overspending.

Starbucks to Offer Mental Health Services As New Employee Benefit: Starbucks recently found that some employees were hesitant to reach out to the company’s Employee Assistance Program, so the coffee giant is working to enhance the program and boost the mental health services offered in employees’ benefits packages. Says CEO Kevin Johnson: “We believe this is a societal problem and we want to take steps within Starbucks for our partners to break the stigma of mental health, acknowledge that it exists, and do some creative things to provide services to those in need.”

The Danger of Avoiding Discord in Your Relationship: Alternatives: If you’re afraid the anger you feel will destroy your relationship (which leads to you act out passive aggressively, steam in silence, or become depressed), then this one’s for you.

New Netflix Show ‘Diagnosis’ Proves Some People Still Don’t Understand Mental Illness: Have you binged Diagnosis yet? Netflix recently released the seven-episode series which follows Dr. Lisa Sanders, a New York doctor and author, while she tries to find answers to patients’ medical mysteries. Christine McCullough weighs in on how a few of the latter episodes do more than just try to find the right diagnosis and treatments for these patients; they also highlight the powerful grip stigma still has on some people.

Receptor Protein in Brain Promotes Resilience to Stress: Researchers have found that S1PR2, a receptor on the surface of brain cells, plays a big role in regulating how we respond to stress. Veterans with extreme post-traumatic stress disorder have lower levels of the receptor protein than those without PTSD, thus suggesting S1PR2 might represent a biomarker of PTSD and could offer a new target for more effective anxiety and stress symptoms.
